Installing google analytics

Well we didn't win the Lotto and so I am still poor. Shame, I would make a great rich person. I really feel I have the class and taste to carry off comfortably rich well. I probably have too much taste to carry off stinking, filthy rich.

There have been a few people that have expressed an interest in loading google analytics on their blog. While google analytics won't actually tell you who has visited like JS used too, it will let you know that people are actually reading your stuff. There are simpler counters you could add, but I prefer the extensive drill down reporting of analytics.

I was going to write instructions on how to install it but the instructions at http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?answer=66983&ctx=sibling are reasonably good.

Tip: To paste the tracking code into your blog you need to go to the layout/template screen and either Edit Html, Edit Source or just Source depending on which blog engine you are using.

If you get stuck, email me at naut023@gmail.com and I will give you a hand.

  3. What I found worked really easy in Blogspot was add a HTML widget down the right hand column and paste the code in one of those. Mine is labelled as 'Secret Stuff' at the bottom of my page. I did it before I went to bed last night and it wasn't tracking. It had a yellow (!) saying it wasn't tracking. I woke up and it was.

Scary the shit google knows about you.

  4. That would totally work and may have the advantage that if you change templates it retains the tracking code.

  5. I just did the same - 'Spying on Me'. I'll see if it works. If it does, someone's a genius and it ain't me.

  7. Ok, I got the widget, but can't for the life of me work out where exactly to paste what in the HTML. Any suggestions other than loosing my mind?

  8. Do I paste it in over the top of what is already on the 'edit HTML' section or just add it to the end?

  9. DD - i haven't done it as a widget so I am not 100% sure. You need to access the HTML source code for the widget and post the tracking code in right before where /body (with <> around it) appears. You get the tracking code when you register for google analytics.

If you are still having trouble you may want to forget about the widget and just paste the code in the template. Alternately email me your blog login details and I will add it (then you should change your password afterwards).

Bob - Search for /body (with <> around it) in the html code and insert it just before that. Do not delete anything.

Beware that it updates overnight, so it will show as not updating until the next day even if you have set it up correctly.

  10. Thank you, like you said it updates overnight so I might just let it be and see what happens tomorrow morning. Hopefully everything will have sorted itself out. I have the Google Analytics page up and running already, just nothing appearing on the blog page.

  11. Sounds like you are on the right track. Nothing will appear on your blog itself as far as counters are concerned. If you used a widget then that widget may display something on your blog like Moko's secret stuff does.

  12. Well if you're going to have a widget that keeps track of who visits I'll just have to keep visiting.
